Il Tesoro di Rita is set in the heart of the Alta Tuscia, Italy’s central highlands on the three-way border between Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany. The hilltop towns and villages in the Alta Tuscia were the seat of the Etruscan civilization, and are replete with Etruscan history, artifacts and ruins.
The house has long-distance views of mountains and rolling farmland. Perched on the edge of Riserva Naturale Monte Rufeno, a large nature reserve with kilometres of trails and a natural history museum; fifteen minutes from Lago di Bolsena, a large and swimmable volcanic lake; and an hour from the Mediterranean, Il Tesoro offers sports enthusiasts excellent opportunities for hiking, biking and swimming.
Twenty minutes west of Orvieto, where one may take one-hour train rides to Rome or to Florence, it also offers guests the opportunity to do day trips to Italy’s famous cities while still able to sleep and relax in silence and fresh air.
The price of accommodation includes a welcome basket with home-made pastries, jams made with fruits from the family orchard, honey, butter, coffee and tea. Guests are also entitled to vegetables from the extensive garden just a few metres from the apartments.
Il Tesoro boasts a large swimming pool (13x8x1.5m), a beautiful gazebo, a ping pong table, mountain bikes, a wood-burning pizza oven, and a brick barbecue with a long table for picnics and large group functions. A “cellaio” (a games room carved out of the old wine cellar) provides a cool space on hot days, with tables and chairs for cards, games or wine-tasting. The property also has a laundry room for guests.
Upon arrival, guests are given a small gift in hand-painted terracotta, in addition to information and a map of the area. At least once a week, a visit to the family farm is organized, where guests can even feed the animals.
The house is equidistant (five kilometres) from the town of Acquapendent and the village of Torre Alfina, where one may buy almost anything in local supermarkets and stores, and where the owners of Il Tesoro have negotiated special deals for its guests with many of the local establishments.
Guests may also take advantage of concessionary rates at the thermal baths in San Casciano dei Bagni (25 minutes away), or take pottery courses at a local potter’s studio.
Il Tesoro also offers residential cooking courses during the off-season.
The four apartments, where accommodation is offered, are carved out of beautiful old stone stables and lovingly furnished with local antiques and artwork.
